The sky was turning into darker shades of blue cobalt and midnight black. Night was approaching rapidly and the shadows were becoming longer with every waking second. You paws are a blur beneath you as you dart through the forest canopy, the beating of your heart pulsing in your ears, louder than thunder. Just when all hope is lost in this labyrinth of a forest, where the sky was barely visible and thick mist loomed over the woodland floor, you hear a bloodcurdling howl, raising above all other noises and echoing long after it was over. You stop running; your fur prickles with indecision as your glowing eyes scan the dark surroundings. A tall, dark figure waits beneath the shadows of the trees. You feel the figure’s presence as dominating. You hold your ground; narrowing your eyes best you can in an attempt to see the figure better. The figure takes a step forward and presents itself to you. It was a she-wolf with a silvery black pelt and piercing eyes the shade of evergreen leaves approaches you. She stops, inches away from you and narrows her eyes, deep in thought.
“Such courage…” She remarked, swishing her long tail. You nod your thanks and the she-wolf smiles. “What brings a wolf such as yourself into our woods then?” She inquires. Only then do you notice more black figures immerging from the shadows.
“Who are you?” You ask, watching the figures slink gracefully into position.
“You may call us,” The she-wolf says, a swift wind blowing her dark fur softly. “The Rebel Blacks.”

The Legend of The Rebel Blacks

Part one: The getaway

“Traitor!” The Storm Pack Alpha barked, throwing himself forward, snarling wildly.

The Storm Pack camp was a mess of wolves, and snarling and snapping at one another with great ferocity. The pack was splitting apart.

“I am a traitor… I am loyal to only Rebel Blacks.” Ghost declared, placing a paw down.

“How could you? We trusted you!” A Storm Pack member barked, acting like a foolish pup. The Storm Pack Alpha looked at the three females in dismay.

“Let’s go Ghost.” Darkness urged, upset the pack had been braking apart, but knowing it was the best thing to do at this point. Darkness was frustrated with the Storm Pack Alpha, it was time to finally speak up and leave this place for good.

“This was supposed to be a place where we could all get along! Why is everyone leaving?” The Storm Pack Alpha howled, his leadership skills draining by the second. A female with a pelt as black as midnight skies, and eyes the color of forest green stepped forward, her dominance overpowering the Storm Pack Alpha’s whimpering attempts at keeping order over his broken pack.

“We are leaving because you are a poor leader, we have made our decision and are leaving you and your out of order pack to wallow in your own pity.”  She barked, her voice booming over the irrational Storm Pack whines and barks. “Now,” She declared, turning to face Darkness and Ghost. “Let’s leave.” She barked.

Ghost glanced around the chaos. Her silvery-gray eyes fell on a male with deep brown eyes. His expression was unreadable. Ghost’s mind raced and she stepped forward.

“Dusk? Are you coming?” She asked, a worried look on her face.

“I…” Dusk barked, the crowd suddenly growing quiet at his smooth voice. “I’m not sure.” He replied, glancing around at the pack wolves. The crowd suddenly rose into a chorus of barks and shouts, each side trying to win over Dusk’s trust.

“Dusk! Please you are a good wolf, stay with Storm Pack!” The Storm Pack Alpha urged.

“Please… Come with us.” Ghost said quietly, her voice droned out by the barking madness. Darkness looked over and could sense Ghost’s tension.

“Dusk, come join us.” Darkness barked. Ghost’s expression lifted slightly. The Storm Pack wolves all howled and snapped, wanting Dusk to be on their side. Dusk stepped forward and spoke out over the crowd.

“Alright, I’ll join Rebel Blacks.” He declared, narrowing his eyes as the Storm Pack.

“What? No!” The Storm Pack Alpha snarled, his eyes darting around, glancing at his own pack and then the Rebel Blacks. Ghost beamed with happiness as Dusk trotted over and joined the Rebel Blacks.

“Let’s be on our way.” Black Heart declared. And with a flick of her tail, The Rebel Black Pack darted off, illusive like the shadows and swifter than the wind...

Part two: A new pack.

Black Heart sat very still as she watched over her small pack. Darkness tended to her pup named Jay, while Dusk sat under a fir tree in deep thought. Black Heart was glad they had made it this far… But still, the temporary camp didn’t provide much shelter, and with winter bringing it’s harsh storms and cold snows, they would need more than just a few trees to keep them safe, warm and dry. Black Heart let her jaw slack as she tested the air with the tip of her tongue. The air tasted cold and unwelcoming. This was defiantly not the place for her pack. They needed to find a permanent home, and fast.

Ghost pricked her ears, listening to the sounds of the forest as she sunk her claws into the earth beneath her. She drew her breaths in slowly, her heartbeats slowing and matching the tone of her steady breathing. An echoed voice coursed through her thoughts as she stood, as still as the trees in deep thought.

“Because no matter what, the wolf’s major senses are smell, taste, hearing and most importantly touch. For if a wolf was ever to lose the feeling of a cool river over their fur, or the feeling of the earth beneath their paws, they would never be truly living.”

Ghost’s eyes flashed open. Her muscles tensed and with one simple movement she darted forward through the forest. Ghost’s heartbeats matched in time with each paw step she took. Her body was low to the ground, ripping through the canopy like an arrow. Ghost felt the current of air slip over her body as the wind howled into her ears. The trees and foliage were mere blurs. Ghost came to halting stop in the temporary camp. Dirt flew from under her paws and left small marks in the earth. Black Heart lifted her head and looked in Ghost’s direction.

“The area is all clear.” Ghost barked confidently. Black Heart nodded in response.

“Very well, we need to head out before the weather gets worse.” She announced. The pack all nodded in agreement, and together, set out to find a better home.

(Sorry It's a bit short, it will be longer next time)
